It seems to me that by billing on time & material we are opening ourselves to close inspection of our real costs by insurors or other clients. That will reveal any margin, and then conversation might begin on what size margin is appropriate, including the salary of the owner. This is particulary true in the cleaning and water mitigation side of the business. Any thoughts?

Great Question, Time and Material is a blended method of billing and must not be confused with Cost Plus. Time and Material consist of Fixed Hourly Labor Rates based on published Labor Classifications. What this allows you to do is bill your labor based on the published hourly rate and labor classification and "NOT" by what you pay the individual. So you have fixed rates on Labor, Equipment and Certain Materials, Vendors are billed at cost and your agreed mark up, and Reimbursables are billed at cost and your agreed mark up - Remember these are published on your Contract so your Client is agreeing to pay the published rates. Time and Material Billing is very popular for Immediate Response for Mitigation for Large Commerical Losses and especially Catastrophe's. I have set up databases in the last 4 months for 6 major insurance companies and a number of Large National Clients (Retail, Industrial, Food Industry to name a few). I hope I answered your question and if you would like to discuss more please email me at support@timematerialsoftware.com
