In light of a recent post wondering about an ebook available for resoration marketing, I thought I would start a thread that might tap the vast knowledge & experience in marketing that is available through this forum. Although I'm not in that pool of vast knowledge, I'll start with one of ours:
Walter Lumpp (a restoration marketing guru in his own right) has always been a fan of the "weather fax", a fax sent out to agents & adjusters that tells the weather forecast for the next few days. Of course, it coveniently has your name & number on it! Another fax he likes is the "on call fax", one that is sent out on Wed night or so that tells who at your company is on call over the weekend and the necessary contact numbers for them.
Well, we thought we would try the on call fax. We started faxing it out using WinFax by Symantec, which is a great fax program. Almost immediately we started getting calls; "take us off the list, we know how to reach you if we need to". It was embarrasing! Well, never one to give up easily, we tweaked the on call fax and started a brain teaser contest with it, using brain teasers from this big book of them that we bought. It is an 8 week contest, and the first person to fax back the most correct answers wins a prize, usually worth 50 bucks or so. Well, truthfully we only have one person who plays consistently, and being mostly uncontested they win almost all the time. The other truth, though, is that for about 10 years now we send out about 100 faxes a week with our info on it, and we have never gotten another call to get off the list!

To be honest with you, we have tried the same marketing concept of faxing a "On call" and "weather alert" and it has not had any leads/jobs return on the time or cost associatied with it.

We do however seem to get a good reply on CE class announcements that are sent via fax, and other games such as March Madness (pick the winner), and NCAA National Championship Game (pick the winner) that are also sent via fax.

We have started using constant contact to run trivia contest and WE DO get a decent return of e-mails from that as well.

My take on the subject - depends on your milk route. If you are seeing agents every 6 weeks, then you probably don't need a fax "On Call" or "Weather Alert" fax because you are visiting their office so much, they should know of you, what you do, and have realtionships built. If you only do milk route visits once every quarter, then retainer faxes, e-mails, etc... are probably needed.
